Book Cover Battle – BEAUTIFUL RUINS by Jess Walter

We Live in Water by Jess Walter

Did you know Jess Walter released his first collection of short stories titled We Live in Water a few months ago?

I only just realised and it has gone straight on my wishlist. I’ve been a huge fan of Jess Walter’s writing ever since I read The Financial Lives of the Poets in 2010. But his more recent bestseller Beautiful Ruins is a bona fide must read for literature lovers – it was one of the few books I awarded 5 stars in 2012.

Despite only being released last year, Beautiful Ruins‘ bestseller status means it has already been published with multiple covers — which do you prefer?

A, B, C

Cover A is the original and in my opinion, the best. It  evokes just the right mix of glamour, history and mediterranean charm for me. Cover B is elegant also but gives the feeling the story is a little more carefree and chicklit-ish than it actually is.

As an author you know you’ve made it when your title is published in what I refer to as ‘Penguin-styling’. While Cover C is a a glowing endorsement for the soon-to-be classic status of this novel and I like the retro chic of the black and white photo imagery, the colour palette used would not make me pick it up had I not already been a huge fan of the work.

I wouldn’t pick up C, it makes the book look pretty old. B’s ok, but yes, chick-lit! And my first thought that the author was a woman would be further ‘confirmed’ by it. A’s still my favourite.

That’s a really interesting observation Charlie about the cover art misrepresenting an author’s gender – I’d not made that connection.
