Book Beginnings on Friday is a meme hosted by Becky at Page Turners. Anyone can participate; just share the opening sentence of your current read, making sure that you include the title and author so others know what you’re reading. If you like, share with everyone why you do, or do not, like the sentence.
I have just started reading The Sweetness at the Bottom of the Pie by Alan Bradley, and the opening sentence is a real cracker:
Confronting. If that does not get your attention, I don’t know what will! Being aware of the young age of the protagonist, I suppose I had preconceived ideas and an expectation of a somewhat cutesy and feel good opening. An author gains my respect immediately when they do something I am not expecting – just know this is going to be a great read!
What do you think about this as an opening line?
Does it make you want to read more like me, or does the mention of blood have the opposite effect?
